You are welcome to come and visit our classroom. Throughout the day you will see various combinations of groups of students. From buddy reading in pairs to whole group of 28, you will witness students engaged in their studies. We begin our day by breaking into five small "Fundations" groups. Fundations is a new type of phonics based program. Exciting drills and strategies are practiced to enhance students with their reading, writing, spelling and handwriting.
In Literacy, our current focus is on non-fiction genre. In Reading Workshop we are studying the attributes found specifically in these types of books. Students are looking at facts verses fiction. They learn how these books differ by such attributes as Table of Contents, Diagrams, Subheadings, etc... In writing each child is working on completing various "All About" books. They are researching and publishing books based on their own interests and expertise.
Math is taught at grade level for both the first and second grade classrooms. Using the Everyday Math program has been a fun way to explore many new concepts and strategies. Emphasis is placed on knowing Math Facts by using various games and activities.
Lincoln is piloting a new Social Studies program. We begin with Civics, DPS Standard 4- understanding how citizens exercise the roles, rights and responsibilities of participation in civic life. Second trimester we will focus on Economics, DPS Standard 1 – understanding that because of the condition of scarcity, decisions must be made about the use of scarce resources. Finally in the third trimester we will study Geography, DPS Standard 1 – know how to use and construct maps, globes and other geographic tools to locate and derive information about people, places and environments. Standard 6 will also be addressed – Apply knowledge of people places and environments to understand the past and present and to plan for the future. Second grade Science is studying the Earth. New books and materials make it easy to study and get actively involved.
We are thrilled about the new "Parent Art Program." Parent volunteers come in twice a week with provided lesson plans. Together we provide more opportunities to explore all kinds of media. Students have created some lovely textile pieces and prints. We believe that Lincoln Elementary is more than a school. We are a close knit-family!
